  4. Seals are mammals that spend most of their time in the water

  6. along coasts of land.  They must have air to breathe, but 
  7.  
  8. some can stay underwater up to 20 minutes.  There are many 
  9.  
  10. different kinds of seals; 13 species belong to the family of 
  11.  
  12. eared seals and 17 species to the family known as earless seals.

  14. The smallest of all the seals is the ringed seal, who weighs 
  15.  
  16. about 200 pounds and is about 4 feet long.  A male elephant 
  17.  
  18. seal, the largest, is about 20 feet long and can weigh 5,000 
  19.  
  20. pounds or more!  Most seals eat fish, shrimp and squids.  Baby 
  21.  
  22. seals, called pups, are born on land.  Several weeks after 
  23.  
  24. birth, their mother teaches them to swim by riding on her back.
