Seals
Seals are mammals that spend most of their time in the water
along coasts of land. They must have air to breathe, but
some can stay underwater up to 20 minutes. There are many
different kinds of seals; 13 species belong to the family of
eared seals and 17 species to the family known as earless seals.
The smallest of all the seals is the ringed seal, who weighs
about 200 pounds and is about 4 feet long. A male elephant
seal, the largest, is about 20 feet long and can weigh 5,000
pounds or more! Most seals eat fish, shrimp and squids. Baby
seals, called pups, are born on land. Several weeks after
birth, their mother teaches them to swim by riding on her back.
